365 : blank skateboard for the disposable show
If you’ve read my Crafty List of Things to Do, you may have wondered about #6 – Design a skateboard. It’s been something I’ve wanted to do since I lived in New York. I spent lots of time on Lafayette wandering into the skate shops and always thought it would be amazing to design a skateboard of my own one day. I can’t believe it, but somehow I met Joey of Freedom Fighter Skateboards and signed up to design a skateboard for a charity auction. The show is called the Disposable Show and will be held on May 8th at 55 McCaul. This year the show will be featuring Canadian talent, including Derrick Hodgson. Whoa. (!!!!!!!)
I just visited Derrick’s blog and he posted one of my photos of his work a couple weeks ago. Too much. Yes, I am a huge, huge fan.
Now I’m incredibly nervous.

365 : paper pieced hexagon project
I didn’t realize how much fun this is. Now I know and I’m a bit obsessed. I have multiple future projects planned of various shapes. (Already!) But for now, I am quickly filling a little tin full of these tiny hexagons.
For size reference, each side of these hexagons measures .75″.

I’ve been hoping to get to Seedy Saturday for the last few years. I was pretty happy to hear that this year they were holding it on a Sunday. A perfect excursion on my day off with Andrew. It was also our first visit to Wychwood Barns. What a great space. The re-purposing of this building and land is very inspirational.
Seedy Sunday was jam packed and I picked up some treats for myself – a signed copy of Gayla’s new book, “Grow Great Grub“, some seeds from Matchbox Garden & Seed and several discs of drinking chocolate from ChocoSol.

I was really excited to be invited to Erica’s birthday party on Saturday, hosted by Anabela & Geoff. Little did I know just how dreamy this party would be. Firstly, their apartment is the cutest thing ever. I hardly knew where to look, there were so many great pieces of art by artists that I love. The place was lit up with twinkle lights and decorated with balloons and peachy, frilly banners. There was a tower of cupcakes and lovely nibbles to eat.
I finally got to meet Nikole in person. Finally. Nikole brought THE cake. I have never seen anything like this spectacular cake. I almost cried when I saw it and it wasn’t even for me. It was a chocolate cake with sour cherries in the middle. It was completely devoured towards the end of the night, but not before it was lit up with over thirty candles which set the tiny little flags on fire.
Did I mention the pink unicorn pinata? or the sparklers, the glitter birthday hats and the exploding streamers? Anabela, you totally set the bar for future birthday parties!
p.s. Celine’s photos from the party are pretty great.
p.p.s. Anabela’s party post is here.

365 : happy birthday erica!
I went to the best birthday party on the weekend, hands down. More photos coming right up.

I’ve had my eye on this dress pattern for a while. It’s my favourite from this book. I really like the yoke with the little split down the centre of it. The open sleeve is also pretty cute.
I made few alterations to this pattern. The first was to take a couple inches off the sides of the dress. I could tell from the picture that all the gathering would just create too much volume for me. The next thing I did was to add pockets into the side seams. Finally. I don’t know why I’ve been avoiding taking this extra step with my dresses, it’s so nice to have pockets! I simply took another dress I have that has pockets I love, traced the pocket piece and measured how far down they were placed. So easy. I also added a little contrasting bias strip between the yoke and the body of the dress and faced the hem of the sleeves since they are so exposed. I learned these bits of detailing when I made the Oliver & S Tea Party Dress and I’ve been wanting to use it again. The metallic floral print was also used for the pocket pieces. These extra details didn’t take that long to do and really make the dress extra sweet.
The fabric is really what this dress is all about though. It is called “Wild Horses” (of course) by Alexander Henry. It looks like it belongs on the side of an 80s airbrushed van and for some reason I love it so much. It was one of those fabrics that when I saw it, I could hardly believe how great it was and then I selfishly bought a bolt because I knew I had to make a dress from it.
I’ve been wearing it with these amazing purple tights I bought in Paris. Perhaps the whole thing is a bit much together, but it makes me pretty happy.
